SCM Mental Health week
Mental health week took place this week in SCM. The Amber Flag committee came up with a weekly wellness calendar for all students to take part in. The calendar had a theme for each day;
Mindful Monday
Tuneful Tuesday
Well-done Wednesday
Thoughtful Thursday
Friendly Friday
Each day, the students of SCM engaged in either a positive mental health discussion activity or a task. The week went extremely well and positive mental health was most definitely promoted throughout the school.
Gaelbhratach
Bronnadh Gaelbhratach nua i mí an Mheithimh. Bhí gach duine ag obair go dian chun Ghaelbhratach breise a fháil. Féach ar na rudaí éagsúla a rinneamar i mbliana!
A new Gaelbhratach (Irish flag) was awarded in June. Everyone worked so hard to get the extra flag. Take a look at some of the things we did throughout the year
Cork City Sports
The children from Scoil Chlochair Mhuire had a fantastic time at this year’s Cork City Sports competition in Munster Institute of Technology. Children took part in the individual sprints and relays. Here are some pictures taken on the day followed by pictures of our yummy pizza party in the school’s BFG garden!
Student Council
This was our inaugural year for the SCM Student Council. The Student Council is fundamental in helping shape and inform school decisions as well as playing an important role in all aspects of school life.
This was our inaugural year for the SCM Student Council. The Student Council is fundamental in helping shape and inform school decisions as well as playing an important role in all aspects of school life. The Council meets monthly to voice student opinions and discuss ways to benefit and further improve the life of our students. In recent months our Student Council have suggested many ideas which have come to fruition. We now have eco-friendly bike and scooter racks in our school and we have ‘Meditation Monday’, a ten minute slot at the beginning of each week to mediate and unwind, preparing us for the week ahead. This is a truly remarkable initiative, who knows what amazing ideas our Student Council will have next.
ESB Science Blast 2022
Science is a huge and vital part of our daily lives. Again this year the pupils of SCM entered the ESB Science Blast Competition… and guess what? We won an award!
Science is a huge and vital part of our daily lives. Again this year the pupils of SCM entered the ESB Science Blast Competition. We built our confidence in maths and science through a hands-on experiment investigating the iron in cereals. We actually used magnets to find REAL IRON FILINGS in Rice Krispies. We followed the 5 steps of science investigation: 1. Define a question to investigate 2. Make predictions 3. Gather data 4. Analyse data 5. Draw conclusions. Our students went a step beyond and even produced their own video to show their results. Well done to everyone involved - the judges were super impressed. Another incredible result for the students of SCM.
SCM Mad Hair Day 🤪
On the 23rd of February, 2022, SCM hosted a Mad Hair Day in aid of Pieta House 💜 The students and staff of SCM got creative with their hair and came to school looking rather ‘Crazy’ 🤪 The Amber Flag committee organised the day and ran a whole school fashion(hair) show which was a great success. The committee members had a tough job of judging the students and picking the craziest hair from each class grouping. You can find pictures of the winners above.
Many of the teachers also took part in Crazy Hair Day. We held an Instagram competition where the best hairstyle group of teachers was chosen. Thank you to everyone who voted and well done to the two winners who received book fair vouchers 👏🏼 After all the fun, donations were counted and an amazing total of €615 was raised for Pieta House. Well done to the students, parents and staff of SCM for raising this fantastic sum of money 👏🏼 Huge thank you to the Amber Flag Committee for organising this day and bringing smiles our faces 🧡
Below you will find some of the teachers who had the ‘craziest’ hairstyles 🦄
Amber Flag
Here are Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, we are extremely excited to announce that we are taking on the challenge of obtaining the Amber Flag with Pieta House.
The Pieta Amber Flag Initiative | Pieta
The Amber Flag initiative is run by Pieta House with the aim of promoting positive mental health in primary and secondary schools. In Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, we recognise that everyone has mental health and that positive mental health for children is part of their overall health and is linked with well-being.
Here at Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, lots of services/activities already exist that promote an ethos of positive mental health. Each class engages in a daily 10@10 where they take a break from learning and take part in some form of physical activity. We also have happiness homework on the first Monday of each month. This encourages the students to engage in wholesome activities at home rather than physical homework, e.g. baking, gardening.
In an attempt to continue this promotion of positive mental health and well-being, an Amber Flag committee has been developed. Representatives were chosen from 3rd to 6th class, and a team of ten students and three teachers was created. In order to achieve the Amber Flag for Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, the whole school community must come together to create a safe, positive and healthy attitudes towards our physical mental health and well-being.
The Amber Flag committee has lots of exciting things planned for the coming months. One main event happening soon is our ‘Crazy Hair Day’ fundraising event. This event will take place on Wednesday the 23rd February and all students and staff are encouraged to get creative and come to school with some ‘mad’ hairstyles. All donations will be going to the well deserved Pieta. We will keep you all posted on some of the looks from the day.

Space Week 2021
At Scoil Clochair Mhuire, we think we know a little more than most about space, after all one of our students did receive a tweet from a real astronaut. We like to keep our teaching and learning current so we are updating our knowledge and learning more. These budding stargazers wrote poems about meeting aliens, danced to space songs, learned about the solar system, designed their own rockets, completed projects on women in space and even made their own moon shelter.

It was an emotional day today In SCM as our class of 2021 graduated after eight years with us. We are proud of our students all year round, but there is always something extra special about graduation day. The day was very well organised, our Parents Association and school staff worked very well as a team - and the event went off without a hitch, even the sun came out to wish the students well. A big congratulations to all involved with a special mention for Sarah Cronin who won the Harte Cup - a recognition of her sporting achievements and sportsmanship. #graduation #classof2021 #justsoproud #community #Carrigtwohill #teamwork
ESB Science Blast Award Winners
This year lots of classes in SCM entered the ESB Science Blast competition and guess what… we won awards!
This year many of the classes in SCM entered the ESB Science Blast Competition and we are very proud to announce that we won awards! Muinteoir Orla’s 6th class completed their experiments on why hot air/water rises and cold air/water sinks. They discovered all about density and convection. Below are some of the photos of the class with their award. The judge was blown away with the high standard of work in the school and went so far as to call us ‘science mad’. We know that science is the way of the past, present and future and so we understand how important it is to foster a love for the subject in the students at a young age.
Múinteoir Hollies 5th class researched the question ‘Does sleep affect our morning mood?’. This question was super interesting to investigate. We surveyed ourselves and one family member over a weeks duration. In this survey, we noted how many hours of sleep we had and our morning mood. Once we had all surveys collected, we constructed graphs outlining the results and wrote paragraphs detailing the information. We then met with an ESB Science Blast judge online and presented our experiment to him. It was a huge success and the judge was extremely impressed with our graphs, results and interest in science.

This week Willie Shubart from Munster Rugby came to Scoil Chlochair Mhuire to do some training with our 6th classes. It was an amazing experience for the children to meet and work with such an expert in the field. We have some incredible athletes in our school community and it was wonderful to see them working together with such a professional. We know how important it is to introduce our children to new experiences because you just never know where they may lead.
We are very lucky to have to facilities of the astro-pitch available to us. It feels great to be part of the community. #musterrugby #scmcarrigtwohill #community #coeducational #bestschool #makelearningfun
