Our Curriculum
Our Curriculum
At Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, we follow the redeveloped Irish Primary School Curriculum, introduced through the new Primary Curriculum Framework, launched in March 2023. This is the most significant update to primary education in Ireland in over 25 years, and we are proud to be fully prepared for it.
The Framework organises learning into five broad curriculum areas: Language, Wellbeing, Arts Education, Social and Environmental Education (SEE), and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Rather than prescribing rigid time slots for individual subjects, the new approach groups learning under these broader areas, giving teachers greater flexibility to meet the needs of every child.
Our staff have completed training in the new curriculum framework and are actively embedding its principles into everyday classroom life. This means your child benefits from teaching that is informed, current, and purposefully designed for the world they are growing up in.
Central to the new curriculum is a set of seven key competencies that underpin all learning — developing children who are not just knowledgeable, but curious, creative, collaborative, and confident.
The seven key competencies in the new Irish primary curriculum are:
Being Well – developing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing
Being a Digital Learner – using digital technology confidently, safely, and creatively
Being Mathematical – applying mathematical thinking and problem-solving
Being a Communicator and Using Language – expressing and understanding ideas through different forms of communication
Being Creative – using imagination, curiosity, and originality
Being an Active Learner – taking initiative, reflecting, and engaging independently in learning
Being an Active Citizen – participating responsibly in communities and society
These competencies are designed to be embedded across all areas of learning rather than taught as separate subjects
The new curriculum promotes a partnership approach, encouraging greater communication between schools and parents. We welcome that. If you ever want to know more about what your child is learning and why, our door is always open.
