STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics
At Scoil Chlochair Mhuire, we want every child to grow up feeling that science and technology are for them — full of possibility, relevant to their lives and genuinely exciting. The new STEM curriculum specification, introduced as part of the Primary Curriculum Framework (2023), gives us a powerful framework to make that happen.
The STEM curriculum represents a significant shift in how primary schools approach these subjects — integrating Science, Technology and Engineering with Mathematics more cohesively, with a focus on scientific inquiry, computational thinking and design thinking. It emphasises playful approaches and real-life contexts over rote learning.
The STEM area brings together two specifications, one for Science, Technology and Engineering and one for Mathematics — incorporated into a single curriculum document to support connections between both.
Children explore the wonders of Living Things, Materials and Energy and Forces through scientific inquiry, asking questions, carrying out investigations and building a strong foundation that prepares them for future learning in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering at post-primary level.
Children are supported to be curious, creative, confident and critical users of technology, developing and applying mathematical thinking and logic to solve real problems. From coding to design challenges to outdoor investigations, STEM learning at Scoil Chlochair Mhuire is hands-on, collaborative and built around the natural curiosity children already bring to school every day.
We believe every child is a scientist and an engineer in the making. Our job is to make sure they believe it too.
