Maths

Mathematics at Scoil Chlochair Mhuire is about much more than numbers on a page. We want every child to leave primary school feeling confident, curious, and capable when it comes to maths, and the new Primary Mathematics Curriculum, launched in September 2023, gives us the tools to make that happen.

The aim of the new curriculum is the development of mathematical proficiency across five interconnected areas: adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and productive disposition. In practice, this means children are not just taught to follow steps, they are encouraged to think, question and make sense of mathematics for themselves.

The curriculum presents a fresh vision for children's mathematical learning, characterised by playfulness, creativity, challenge, risk-taking, collaboration and opportunities for reasoning and solving real-life problems. Our staff have received training in the new curriculum and are fully implementing its approaches across all class levels.

A key feature of the new approach is promoting "maths talk" — encouraging children to express their mathematical thinking, strategies and ideas out loud. Research consistently shows that when children can explain their reasoning, their understanding deepens significantly.

Mathematics sits within the STEM curriculum area alongside Science, Technology and Engineering, supporting connections between subjects and helping children to understand relationships, patterns and the world around them.

We know maths can sometimes feel daunting for parents trying to help at home, particularly as methods have evolved. We are happy to share resources and guidance so you can support your child's maths journey with confidence.
