English
Strong literacy skills are the foundation of every child's education, and at Scoil Chlochair Mhuire we take the teaching of English seriously, from the earliest days in Junior Infants right through to Sixth Class.
The Primary Language Curriculum sets out an image of children as communicators, readers, writers and thinkers, with a vision of primary classrooms as places where children are enabled to progress at their own pace in environments that are supportive, engaging and inclusive. Our staff have been trained in this curriculum and bring its principles to life every day in the classroom.
Listening, speaking, reading and writing are treated as interrelated processes rather than isolated skills, meaning your child develops as a confident, rounded communicator, not just someone who can pass a test. Oral language activity is central to the curriculum and from the youngest classes, children are encouraged to express themselves, ask questions and engage in discussion.
In reading, we focus on building genuine enjoyment and comprehension alongside phonics and fluency. Children are supported to engage with a wide range of genres — from narrative and poetry to informational texts so that reading becomes a lifelong habit, not just a school activity.
In writing, children learn to plan, compose and edit their own work across a variety of purposes and styles, developing their individual voice along the way.
We know that parents play a vital role in supporting literacy at home. Whether it is reading together at bedtime or encouraging a love of storytelling, the habits formed outside school matter enormously. We are always happy to share ideas on how to support your child's literacy journey.
