Exploring 3D Shapes with Marshmallows

This week, maths got hands-on (and sticky!) in fifth class as our class explored 3D shapes in a very sweet way — using marshmallows and toothpicks!

As part of our work on shape and space, the students were challenged to construct a variety of three-dimensional shapes, from cubes and pyramids to more ambitious creations like prisms and octahedrons. The marshmallows acted as vertices and the toothpicks as edges, helping the children to visualise and understand how these shapes are built.

Not only was this a brilliant way to learn about edges, faces and vertices, but it also encouraged:
✔️ Problem-solving
✔️ Teamwork
✔️ Creativity

It was wonderful to see how engaged the children were throughout the activity — even when a few marshmallows mysteriously disappeared along the way! (We suspect some sneaky architects may have sampled the building materials 😄).

Well done to everyone for your enthusiasm and fantastic constructions — maths has never been so tasty!
